Sciatica for 6 Months, Please help me Esther :(
Hi Esther, Fellow Forum Members. My names Paul, I'm a 23 year old Male who has had pretty good health all my life. About a year ago I started getting pinching pains behind my knees, the would only come and go occasionally, and usually at night, a quick walk around my house would usually fix it. I sat at a computer alot, with a tucked in pelvis and it got worse and worse. Eventually I started getting what other weird symptoms - * Constant Aches and pains that go from my thigh to just below my knee * Feelings of Cold water dripping down the back of my leg or the front of my shin * Muscle Twitches and Spasms in my leg that I cant control ( little ones for a second ) * Numb Big Toe and Littlest Toe when sitting So I went to see a Doctor who said I had a small bulging disc in my L5S1 And a Small Bulge in my L4/L5 This was 6 months ago. I did my stretches , Made my hamstrings longer, but it didn't help. The pain has gotten nasty lately, I cant lie down or even sit and watch tv properly without aches and pains, inflamation and other discomfort. My Girlfriend purchased me your book for my Birthday 2 weeks ago, and I've been trying stretch sitting but all it does is make my toes go numb and give me sciatica. I think I'm doing it wrong, I cant make my spine stretch, When I sit down, stick my bum out, tip my pelvis forward and pull myself up with my bum glued to the chair I find that when I want to lean back and relax I want to curve my back, even with a support/towel on the upper part of the chair. That and my Buttocks really hurt sitting in that position, is that a good sign? I've given up hope that I'll ever be cured, What bugs me the most is I had a repeat mri showing the bulging disc had shrunk and isnt even touching the nerve anymore. I dont know what to do or who to turn to, The doctors have given up on me saying they cant find anything wrong. My Back should be normal and healed, Im 23 for goodness sake, ive been taking special vitamins and stretching, but ive now been in pain for 6 months. I'm convinced the chiropractor I went to see in January screwed me over, after seeing him a first time that night my leg turned to electricty an ive been in pain ever since. The pain doesnt make sense for a bulging disc/sciatica. I have NO back pain, NO Buttock Pain, My SI Joint is fine. All the doctors have said is my pelvis is twisting a bit as one of my feet is curving in, so I mustnt be standing straight. All I know Is im in agony every day and Im actually getting to a point where suicide would be nice, if it means no more pain. Any tips ? *edit* I dunno if this helps, but so far here's what different Phyisos have told me, I've seen about 8 ranging from Sports Injury Specialists, to McKenzie Doctors. * The cold water feeling in my legs like Water dripping down is limited mobility * My Bottom 4 Vertebrae are locked together ( Just stiff, not stuck forever ) * I needed a curve in my lower spine ( I have one now, and it didnt help, its a big curve too ) * Your right foot tilts inwards * Your lower back has no muscle tone at all * Your not using your core * Your S.I Joints are slightly out * One side of your body is fat and curvey, and the other is more slim ( overweight on one side? ) * Your Spine is very slightly curved

Number one rule: pain is almost never a good sign. Unless you understand exactly why a particular ache or pain is good, assume it is bad. This approach is not about working through pain, nor do we have the philosphy of "no pain, no gain." Pain is Nature's way of telling you to do something differently. I'm pretty sure we could help you, but I'm not sure the forum is the place to do it. Here are some things to check: 1. Are the muscles so tense they resist being stretched even a little? If they don't give, then forcing a stretch just causes the super-tight muscle to press against whatever is close to it, possibly nerves. Possible solutions: "breathing in the back" (tricky to explain - look at the tallstanding chapter), acupuncture, warm baths, heat pads, muscle relaxants (and in extreme cases, shots of lidocaine or even cortisone - but this is very rarely necessary.) 2. Are you stretching too much? 3. It sounds like you are trying to stacksit and stretchsit at the same time. When you are preparing to stretchsit, you don't want to be sitting on your tail, it's true, but don't exaggerate putting your bum back or you'll end with a sway (sounds like you're doing that.) Just seat yourself back in the chair without much ado and then stretchsit. My recommendation: call the office to make an online appointment unless you're close to one of our teachers and don't despair.

I'm in Calgary, Canada, I dont belive there are any teachers here for your method sadly, I have looked :( Would I be able to skype call you and send you some posture photos? I think theres a dead give away after looking at them, I appear to be leaning forward, I look like the leaning tower of Pisa.

We do have a teacher in Vancouver beginning very soon. I know that's far, but hands-on is the best way to learn. Email our office at [email protected] to get details on how we do our online consultations (we use Webex, which is better than Skype and you don't need anything fancy.) I looked at the pictures you sent me via email and you really do need the entire course - you could try one session using Webex and see how that goes. It often works surprisingly well. And if it doesn't, then you need to figure out which of the cities that we teach in is the easiest for you to get to. In about a week we will be posting several more locations where the course will be offered, but Vancouver will be the closest for you.

Hi Esther, I will try book an online appointment when I can afford it, for the time being I'm going to have to watch your online course. It's getting really difficult to walk up hills now without my legs turning to cold water, and My Doctor wants me to see a Neuro Surgeon. Last Mri I had showed nothing, that I was in perfect health, with a SMALL bulge in l5s1 and l4l5 , not even touching the nerve.

It's good news that the MRI findings are minimal. Most back problems in fact are "non-specific," meaning that from the conventional point of view, the cause is not understood. It's not okay for you to continue in this vein. Call the office at 50-324-3244 and figure out with Heather how to get the care you need.

Thanks, I'd give anything to attend an appointment with you, I just dont earn much as I cant work much or do any labour at the moment, legs turn to cold water which Is driving me crazy. I'm really really starting to doubt if I'll ever get better, your book has inspired me, but I'm still really scared that my legs will become useless if I wait much longer. Will call Heather on Monday morning.
