Snoring on back

Hi All,

I was a dedicated stomach-sleeper before taking Esther's class.  It took me about a year to train myself to sleep on my back and/or side, but I'm glad to say I've done it.  What a difference!  The first time I fell asleep on my back and slept for 4-5 hours, I woke up feeling wonderful.  Not only did my back NOT hurt...it felt pleasant!  I felt like a newborn.  But now I have a problem.  When I sleep on my back, I snore, and it disturbs my wife.  I feel pretty good sidelying, but back-lying is the best.  Any ideas on how to stop snoring when I sleep on my back?  I'd sure like to eliminate it.  For now, if I find myself resting in bed on my back at night, I have to correct myself to side-lying.  It's very disappointing.  Any input/ideas would be welcome.

Thank you much,

Eliot

I have the same problem, except it also wakes ME up. The only thing I know of that might help is sleep apnea remedies like a CPAP or dental appliance. I'm that desperate. Could we find a back-friendly way for side-sleeping? Do all those indigenous people in the book illustrations sleep on their backs?

Hi Eliot,

Unfortunately I do not have a fabulous solution for you.  Snoring is a problem for some back sleepers for sure.  You may want to try and elevate your pillow a little bit to make sure that your chin doesn't lift upward.  This will also ensure that your neck stays long.  Keeping the pillow slightly under the shoulders and even placing a folded sheet only under your head (and under the pillow) can be helpful.  Some of my students have reported success with the breathing strips as well.

good luck!
