opinion on comments about a book on yoga anatomy
Dear Esther, Could I have your opinion on the comments about a yoga anatomy book from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Scientific-Keys-Vol-II-Poses/product-reviews/0977961427/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 I have purchased countless books and dvds on yoga but they do not tell you what muscles need to be engaged and if they should be contracted, relaxed or firmed and how the joints should be aligned. I believe this is important because most books and dvds only tell you for exemple to bend your legs without telling you the correct way. Any suggestions for excellent books and dvds on yoga that incorporate the above. thanks

I have the first edition of Scientific Keys at home. At Yoga Mendocino, I use the second edition for teaching. Other than Netter for anatomical illustrations, this is the reference book I use.

Dear Esther and Friends, I have read this outstanding book. The pictures are astounding. How many times have your read a yoga book or watched a yoga video where you were instructed, for example,to bend your leg where your knee should be over your second toe. This does not tell you much. THere are countless ways to use your muscles to achieve this end, whether right or wrong. This book tells you what muscles to contract and stretch in a great graphical display correctly. Everyone should know about anatomy so that they know how to use their body. The majority of yoga instructors have no idea on anatomy and are not aware of each person's unique design.I have learnt so much by reading this book especially how I was incorrectly using my muscles. This book is for beginners and advanced alike. You have to get to know your body and how it works because an instructor does not know how you feel internally. I encourge everyone to buy a book like this and learn about their anatomy. It is not difficult. You need to know how muscles operate in particular pose. It is very important to not just individualise a particular muscle in a pose because there are others working with that muscle.I think Esther's book is outstanding. But what would make it even better would be to show for example how the whole group of muscles work when glidewalking. That is make mention of the quadricep muscles. A suggestion would be to have pictures like the ones in this book. You would learn so much more. Regards

Forgot to tell you blue muscles are contracting and red muscles stretching. Different shades of the same colour signifies different levels of contraction or stretching. Regards

Dear Esther and Friends,

Here is a link to amazon that has some excellent DVDS (volumes 1 and 2)regarding human anatomy. The explanations are clearly and simply explained. Excellent to complement your yoga practice and the books I previously recommended. Any opinions welcome.
